Background of the Study
Idioms in Yoruba encapsulate cultural wisdom and provide unique insights into the language’s evolution. In Abeokuta, diachronic semantic shifts in idioms reveal how meaning changes over time due to social, political, and technological influences. Traditional idiomatic expressions, originally rooted in agrarian and communal contexts, are adapting as modern experiences reshape their usage (Oladele, 2023). These semantic shifts often result from interactions with global languages, the influence of media, and shifts in cultural practices. Studying these changes offers valuable insights into the dynamic nature of language and how communities negotiate meaning. Through analysis of historical texts, oral traditions, and contemporary usage, researchers can trace the evolution of Yoruba idioms and assess the factors driving semantic change (Adebayo, 2024; Olanrewaju, 2025). This study appraises the extent and nature of these semantic shifts, providing a basis for understanding broader language evolution and cultural transformation in Abeokuta.
Statement of the Problem
Although Yoruba idioms are integral to cultural expression, there is limited systematic research on their diachronic semantic shifts. In Abeokuta, rapid modernization and cultural change have led to alterations in idiomatic meanings, yet the mechanisms behind these shifts remain unclear (Oladele, 2023). This gap complicates efforts to preserve the richness of Yoruba heritage and poses challenges for language education. The study aims to fill this void by investigating how and why idiomatic meanings have evolved over time, and to propose methods for documenting and teaching these changes effectively (Adebayo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To document semantic shifts in Yoruba idioms over time.
To analyze the sociocultural drivers of these changes.
To propose strategies for preserving traditional idiomatic meanings.
Research Questions:
What semantic shifts have occurred in Yoruba idioms?
How do cultural and social changes influence these shifts?
What approaches can help preserve idiomatic heritage?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of semantic shifts in Yoruba idioms, contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage and informing language education in Abeokuta (Oladele, 2023; Olanrewaju, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to diachronic analysis of Yoruba idioms in Abeokuta; excludes other regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Diachronic: Pertaining to changes over time.
Semantic Shifts: Changes in meaning of words or expressions.
Idioms: Fixed expressions with figurative meanings.
